Book 2, Chapter Eight: Genesis, Pages 215 and 216

Eagle-eyed Servant reaches for this fallen letter,
    “Ah, oop! And this?”

Alexander snatches the letter hastily before the Servant’s hand. “Uh, nah!”
He then clears his throat, brushing aside the brief interruption of his kingly manner.
“That’s just a letter for mater.
    We write often”
He settles back down quietly as he rereads the letter, as his mind keenly ruminating the words, phrases and sentences he might use to delight his mother.

“How is your mother, by the way?” asks the Servant.

    “Safe and warm, I hope.”
Alexander places his hand over the Wonder Stone around his neck. The present which he received from a mysterious Lady not long ago, an aid to guide his way to the Water of Life.
    “I must confess.
When we met the lady who gave me this stone… I was nearly overcome.
She looked so much like mater.”

He recalls the shock of their earlier encounter; of seeing a face dear to his heart, which before this he hadn’t realised he had almost forgotten.
The Lady was of darker hair and visage, but her witchy demeanour, severe face and piercing gaze could not be closer in resemblance to his beloved mother,
from whom he gained his beauty,
    yet more importantly, his ambition.

“I hadn’t realised how quickly time had passed since I left Macedon.
Eleven years… can you believe it?”

The Wonder Stone shivers in his hand.

    Chapter Eight 215-216

    Alexander is mama’s boy.

We don’t really know what Olympias looks like (save that one gold coin which supposedly has a portrait of her). I chose to design Olympias with the most shared resemblance to Alexander, to visually reinforce their closeness. My own take is that a lot of Alexander’s personality – the ambition, ruthlessness and audacity – comes from his mother’s influence.
