raps the Servant’s knuckles on the door.
A pair of eyes appear from within the dark confines of the house
suspiciously looking at the old stranger in green
who tips his verdant hat.
“Greetings, good lady! I am a companion of the great king Alexander,
and we kindly seek shelter at your humble abode, for just a little while
until this heat has passed.”
The owner of the house steps carefully out the door –
a small brown woman, the age of your mother,
adorned in beads and metals gold from head to neck,
and a red shawl of yellow patterns –
this lady eyes with steely coolness
at halo-haired Alexander high on his horse.
Alexander who is wide-eyed
and flummoxed by a memory of a person
he had not seen in eleven years.
The Lady beckons them with open arms,
“The king will always have my welcome. Please,
enter.”
