Book 1, Chapter Seven: The Ascent, Pages 151 and 152
Author’s Voice:
Now, my friends, behold.
On many a church wall
And pillar and vellum,
And misericord too,
Poets and painters great
Had depicted for us
This lofty fantasy
Of the great hero-king
Alisaunder. Alejandro, Alexandre
Who through clever scheming
And desire, once rode
On the backs of griffins.
Reached impossible heights.
(on the right page is a border containing within several references of the ascent of Alexander as seen in books and churches. There are little illustrations of the artists at work: a carpenter has left his tools behind on the church floor while out for lunch; an illuminator is jazzing up their book; and the author making this page on the laptop and tablet)
