Book 1, Chapter Seven: The Ascent, Pages 155 and 156
He turns left and right but can barely make out
The angels who know his name, faces like fog.
They reply:
Not one iota of this world have you truly seen,
and still,
you dare assume the heavens await your conquest?
Turn back.
The flying chariot, not built for this height,
begins to fall apart, seemingly at the chiding of the angels.
The wood snaps,
and in his attempt to hold on, Alexander loses control of the kebab.
The angels warn again:
Turn back.
The griffins rush after their elusive bait,
pulling king and chariot with them to the ground in a rain of falling debris.
The angels shake their heads,
and just before the world goes black, the angels give Alexander one last warning:
Look down upon the earth, child!
Author’s Voice:
Just as it was before.
This time, once more.
The ending is always the same.
