Book 1, Chapter Three: The Taming of Bucephalus, Pages 61 and 62

    “Well, pater,”
says Alexander, strutting haughtily towards his wide-eyed father, horse in hand,
“Is there value in him now?”

    Philip, speechless, replies,
    “Ah… my…
    My darling prince! Oh!”

He cups his son’s cheeks, awed.
“Macedon cannot contain you! With a gift like that,
you are bound for bigger kingdoms!”

He then smacks the horse merchant on the back.
“It’s settled then! I will buy him!”

    Joy in his heart,
    Alexander embraces his well-gotten steed,
a loyal companion who will follow him
    forever into history.
    “Thank you, my friend.
    Now…”

He tugs the reins, with the horse’s assent.
    “Let’s get outta here!
    Euai!”

    And off they go!
Leaving poor Philip in the dust,
    calling after them.
