Book 1, Chapter Two: A Call to Adventure, Pages 35 and 36

They cross the gates of Babylon,
    and
enter the country, teeming now with the prosperous fruits of harvest: the sheep and the shepherd’s child, the dates and the farmers, and
    the barley and basket weavers,
    luminous in the morning sun.

    The country eventually gives way
to wilderness, to wildflowers and solitude,
only Alexander and the Servant and their steeds.
    Far away from the world.

    Chapter Two 035-036

Really hyped to show a little of my approach to Mesopotamia 4th century BCE!!

I wanted to depict the farmland and the farmers of Babylon – ordinary folks going about their lives and doing the work that supports Great People like Alexander… If you’ve been following my historical fiction work you’d realise my interest in material culture and the people who produce these things, and my disinterest in royalty, so this spread is a reflection of that. The world can have their kings and queens. Give me sun-baked mundanities and basket weavers and dirty feet instead…
